In autumn 2006, the scientific proponents of the Knet-Networks of RENET Austria and the Kplus-Centre Austrian Bioenergy Centre, agreed upon a joint submission within the framework of the newly formed COMET Programme. The subsequent 2-stage evaluation process within the framework of the COMET Programme assessed the project extremely positively, so that in October 2007, concrete measures for the unification of both predecessor organizations could begin to form the K1-Centre BIOENERGY2020+.

The goal was to maintain the use of the organisational structure of the Austrian Bioenergy Centre Corporation as the operating carrier company (change of name). Since the (sub-) area structure was not greatly changed through the merger, the organisational and procedural mechanisms of the ABC Corporation remained in place.

Within the time period between Jannuary to June 2008, numerous Workshops were coordinated and the necessary bases for the cooperate adaptations of the merger as well as the COMET Programme relevant documents were compiled.

The official launch of the sponsorship and thus the start of the seven-year duration of the centre was finally achieved by the fulfilment of all the necessary criteria on 01.04.2008.

On October 24, 2008, the notarial deed necessary for the name change took place and as a result, the entry in the company book as BIOENERGY2020+ GmbH finally took place.
