Process Control Techniques

Higher fuel flexibility and the goal of further emission reduction also calls for a further improvement of process control strategies. State-of-the-art technologies based on stored program control have already reached a high level and have thus only a low potential for further optimisation, such as the implementation of fuzzy logic tools. In the medium to long term, the shift to model based control systems programmed on microprocessor technologies seems to provide the most promising option for further improvements. Moreover, the application of virtual sensors, which can be developed as a by-product of model based control routines, is a promising future option.

The R&D of process control has been a major research field of BIOENERGY 2020+ from the beginning, starting with the development of a fuzzy logic supported process control strategy. Presently, R&D in this field focuses on the basic research of model based control strategies, which is planned to continue in order to develop this strategy to the demonstration stage. Model based control systems are regarded as the best future option in conjunction with the deployment of new biomass fuels and the increased flexibility of optimal combustion efficiencies to be able to further reduce emissions as well as ensure the plant availability.
