Thermal Gasification

The use of Biomass by means of gasification is the central point in this field of study. Through thermal or biological gasification, different biogenic raw material can be used as productgas or biogas. This technology thus plays an important roll in the vision of a sustainable and maintained energy supply.

The applications comprise the traditional combined heat and power (CHP) uses by means of gas-powered units, performing in a range of 100-5,000 kWel. For larger units (> 5,000 kW), gas turbines are a reasonable machine to make us of. In the future, the use of micro-gas turbines in the smallest range of performance (50-250 kW) will come further into question. High temperature fuel cells offer an interesting outlook for the future, as the technical development for unit sizes of >1 kWel is currently still in progress.

In addition to this direct energetic use, the product gas or bio-gas as synthetic gas brings a promising range of applications. With this application, pipeline-bound (SNG) and storable liquid energy sources as well as raw material (Methanol, FT-Fuels) can be made available. Finally, the production of hydrogen from biomass depicts an interesting future prospect (see Biofuels).

The development and optimisation of the required processes are to be divided along the production chain into three sectors: gas production, gas processing and gas applications.
